Hawaii bling shines on the AAA Five- and Four Diamond lists

Erika Engle

The isles’ AAA Five Diamond Award-winning hotels and restaurants have held steady, while the Four Diamond Award winners’ list is fraught with drama.

Among lodgings, the Montage Kapalua Bay (formerly Residences at Kapalua Bay), is a newcomer to the Four Diamond winners’ ranks, as is the Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, though AAA misspelled the brand name in its initial list. Andaz converted the long-vacant Renaissance Wailea Beach Resort, which had become a beachfront eyesore, into the award-winning property beginning in 2010.

Dropped from the Four Diamond Award list for 2015 are the JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa at Ko Olina, and Four Seasons Resort Lana’i, Lodge at Koele, which are planning to close for renovation and rebranding. Their signature fine dining restaurants, Azul and The Dining Room, respectively, also were dropped.

The Manta & Pavilion Wine Bar on the Kohala Coast of Hawaii island is this year’s Four Diamond malihini.

The Five Diamond winners, and the years since they’ve made the list by maintaining AAA’s standards of excellence, are the Ritz-Carlton Kapalua (1996), Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu (1998), and Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea (1991), and restaurants La Mer in Halekulani (1990), and Chef Mavro (2008).
