A moderate quake that struck Hawaii island this morning did not pose a tsunami threat.

A moderate earthquake struck the summit of Kilauea Volcano this morning but does not pose a tsunami threat.

The preliminary magnitude 5.5 quake struck at 4:32 a.m., 4.2 miles east-southeast of Ohaikea on Hawaii island at a depth of just under a mile, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

“No tsunami is expected,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. “However, some areas may have experienced strong shaking.”

No serious injuries were immediately reported.
