Reverend David's Thoughts

As of this writing, Spring 2024 is an hour old. This year’s Spring Equinox is the earliest since 1896. Soon flowers will be in bloom and so it’s a wonder that at this time of year, one of the symbols we associate with the birth of Prince Siddhartha, are flowers. It is said that flowers started to rain down and lotus blossoms bloomed under the foot of the Baby Buddha as he took his first 7 steps, and of course the centerpiece of Hanamatsuri is the Hanamido, a flower throne in which we pour sweet tea on the Baby Buddha. Flowers bloom in their own way, just like how we live our lives in the Nembutsu. Let us together hear the calling of the Buddha and allow our lives to blossom.

President's Message

Aloha. It looks like we will be having a live Bon Dance on Saturday, June 15, 2024. Please "step up to the plate" and volunteer to make it happen. Thanks in advance. Being retired, getting old, and trying to read a lot, I expected no new life experiences could "open my eyes". But the word "communication" has affected my life these past few months. We need good communication and understanding to reach a common goal. Any difficulties in this process. And our world becomes complicated.  Have a good everyday, everybody.

Craig T. Tsutsumi

2024 Hongwanji Slogan  ~ Building Healthy Sanghas: Sharing Nembutsu Moments

History:

Ewa Hongwanji Mission was organized in 1901 as an affiliate temple of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii to propagate the doctrine of the Jodo Shin denomination of Buddhism, and has continued to provide religious programs and activities to the Ewa and surrounding communities throughout its 120-year history.

Our Temple:

Ewa Hongwanji is situated in Ewa Town on Renton Road, just down the street from the old Sugar Mill and the newer Ewa Mahiko Park (see map below).

We currently have monthly services on the fourth Sunday of each month at 11:00 a.m., observing current COVID-19 protocols.

Every third Saturday in June is our annual Bon Dance* when we honor our ancestors with an evening of joyful dancing.

Ewa Hongwanji kicks off the temple Bon Dances every year and is well attended with great food, fellowship, and dancing.

*Because of the Pandemic, we were unable to have our traditional Bon Dance the past two years.

We hope we'll be able to dance around the yagura next year!
